Patients hospitalized for urogenital infections at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljević" in Zagreb treated in the period from 1997 to 2001, were analyzed. A total of 2810 patients during five years period were analyzed. In 1626 (57, 8%) patients the disease manifested as acute first infection of the urogenital tract with E. coli as the most frequent causative agent (1582 ; 56, 3%). Female patients (2236 ; 79, 5%), aged 19-60 years dominated among the total number of treated. Patients were most frequently treated with gentamycin (1582 ; 56, 3%) and cephalosporins II and III generation (781 ; 27, 7%). Cure and improvement were recorded in 2640 patients (93, 9%). Urogenital infections hospitalized at our clinic are predominantly caused by acute pyelonephritis, but in recent years more patients are hospitalized suffering from other urogenital infections with complicated clinical presentation or because of administration of parenteral therapy.
