In December, 2001, a conference on public health and peace took place in Skopje, the capital of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, acountry on the fringe of war. Supported and sponsored by the European Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe and the German and Macedonian governments, the meeting gathered more than 100 public-health professionals and representatives of peace-promoting organisations from 20 countries.
