Sažetak
One of the ways to establish deposition of chemical compounds into ecosystems is to use certain plant species as bioindicators. In the past decade elevated concentrations of sulphur dioxide have been recorded in east Istria. We used black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) cultures for the purpose of monitoring of sulphur dioxide emissions by Plomin power plant, located on the east coast of Istria. Starting in year 1999, Plomin power plant uses coal with substantially lower percentage of sulphur and employs desulphurization process, which should lead to considerably lower emissions of smoke gases. Nevertheless, in year 1999 and 2000, the concentrations of sulphur in plant material were still high, especially on plots located closer to the power plant. In comparison with natural concentrations, the values recorded were in the range from critical level to high load. In addition to presenting the data on sulphur loads in black pine stands at various distances from Plomin power plant, in this paper the results are compared to St classification values given by several authors.
