Sažetak
The dynamics of biosynthesis of vitamin C carotenoids was investigated in the course of development of soybean seed of Maksimirka and Srećka cultivars under defined climatic conditions in 1977 and 1978. The tests were carried out at weekly intervals from the moment the seed became suitable for analysis to its full maturity. The fluctuation of the dry matter content points to an intensive cumulation of all seed components from about 30 DAF to about 65 DAF (2nd, 3rd, 4th development stages). It is in this period that the content of tested seed components, expressed in mg/seed, increases rapidly, indicating their important role in the photosynthetic and biosynthetic processes in the seed. From 65 DAF, when the seed is physiologically mature and the largest part of components synthesized, up to full maturity, their content, in mg/seed, decreases. The relative values (mg/100 g dry matter) show a steady decrease during the whole seed development period. The synthesis of both components is affected by climatic conditions. Their content was considerably lower in the whole seed development period of both cultivars in the climatically less favourable 1978 than in 1977. Parallel fluctuation of both absolute and relative values of the vitamin C and carotenoid contents, i.e. their parallel biosynthesis, confirm the hypothesis on their metabolic interrelatedness in the solar energy conversion system, in which ascorbic acid, acting as a reductant, gets involved in the protection of carotenoids from the photosensitized singlet oxygen and peroxide formation.
