Sažetak
The paper presents an architecture that enables visual configuration and control of distributed applications (DA). A distributed application in the context of this paper is defined as a collection of communicating data acquisition and processing software modules residing on computer network nodes, and a central control node (CN) running a graphical user interface to the application. The system management complexity is tackled by decoupling two sets of tasks: the programming-in-the-small (data processing module design) and the programming-in-the-large (DA configuration and user interface design). A novel underpinning middleware layer (SML) manages all software modules. An object oriented multifaceted graphical editor performs DA configuration and user interface design. The complete architecture is based on de facto standards: generic UNIX operating system, TCP/IP suit of protocols, and X Window System graphics, enabling quick system integration into industrial environments. The implementation of some exemplar tasks showed great improvement in DA reconfiguration and user interface design over the conventional systems. The design of specific DA processing software modules requires traditional programming skills.
