Sažetak
An increase in asthma related morbidity and mortality has been recently reported in Croatia, resulting in a substantial increase in the economic impact of this condition. Five hundred and five patients (56.4% females), age I 8-5 5 years, seeking medical care for asthma in Croatia participated. Annual medical costs were retrospectvely determined by estimating use of resources, including diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Average annual GP visits per patients was 12. At least one hospital and Emergency Room (ERJ visits were reported annually by 12.5% and 35% patients respectively. Furthermoe, 3 3 YO of patients reported being on sick leave due to asthma. Direct costs comprise of outpatient medical care (2, 057 us$), drugs (8, 138 uss$), hospital treatment (4, 684 US$), ER visits (2, 626 US$) as well as sickness benefits (6, 27sUS$). The total annual direct medical costs were 23, 784 US$ for the asthma patients in the study. Using GINA alogrithm 25% of patients were classified as having intermittent asthma. Of the patients having chronic asthma 45.3% as good control, 45.3% as moderate control and 9.4% as poor control. This study demonstrates that asthma represents a substantial burden on health care resources in Croatia. Majority of patients on existing therapies do not have good control of their asthma and consume substantial resources.
