Sažetak
The purpose of the current study was to examine the most frequent symptoms of vocal fatigue among female schoolteachers (N=51, mean age/year=40.8, mean working experience/year=15.7). All subjects completed a questionnaire that assessed some general information, and those related to vocal fatigue where special consideration was given not only to phonatory and physical aspects, but also to emotional and social. The data were processed on the descriptive and multivariate level. The results showed that 63% of teachers considered themselves to have vocal fatigue. Half of the teachers reported to have its symptoms after the classes, and 18% during the teaching. Among the most frequent symptoms were hoarseness, dryness in the throat, coughing, deeper pitch of the voice and unpleasant feeling in the neck and throat. Additionally, the results showed that 35% of the teachers tried to avoid speaking when feeling these symptoms, and 30% of the teachers lost the desire for speaking. The results of the multivariate statistical analysis showed four factors extracted by the factor analysis. These were the factor of vocal fatigue after the work (F1), the factor of emotional and social aspects of vocal fatigue (F2), the factor of correlation between pitch of the voice and dryness in the throat (F3), and the factor of recognizing phonatory dangerous situations (F4). Correlations between F1 and F2, and between F2 and F4 were found. The overall conclusion was that vocal fatigue is a frequent problem among schoolteachers, and that its symptoms had adverse effects not only on phonatory ability and expressiveness, but moreover on emotional and social sphere of life.
