Sažetak
The aim of this study was to determine which variety of English students use and which variety they prefer. The research includes a two-part questionnaire: 1) the first part pertains to usage based on the most common differences in grammar, lexis and spelling and 2) an exercise developed to elicit their preference regarding American or British English. The study was carried out with second and fourth-year students of English language at the Faculty of Education in Osijek. The research results revealed that on the one hand students used British English more than American English and on the other hand, students preferred American English to British English. Although British English has been traditionally accepted as the preferred variety of English in Croatian schools, the American variety has become the preferred variety according to the students` attitude, while British English still dominates according to their usage.
