Sažetak
Graft copolymers are made either from one polymer and one monomer or from two polymers. The grafting is usually complicated by phase separation and the final product is a blend rather than a pure copolymer. Phase separation is caused by thermodynamically incompatible main chain and the branch chains. Synthesis of graft copolymers enables chemically bounding of immiscible polymers that significantly differ in properties like elastomer and thermoplast. This is the reason why the graft copolymers perform well in new applications for which the individual polymer components are not suited to. In this study four different types of graft copolymers were synthesized: ethylene-propylene-diene-graft-polystyrene (EPDM-g-PS), ethylene-propylene-diene-graft-isocyanate-containinig monomer HH (EPDM-g-HH), polyethylene-graft-polystyrene (PE-g-PS) and polyethylene-graft- isocynate-containing monomer HH (PE-g-HH). The in-situ polymerization of two monomers (styrene and HH) onto EPDM and PE was carried out in toluene solution using dibenzoyl-peroxide as the initiator at 90°C. Graft copolymers were synthesized for different period of time (1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 hours for EPDM-g-PS, PE-g-PS, EPDM-g-HH and for PE-g-HH 5, 15, 30 and 45 minutes) to study the influence of chemical structure of polymer chains on final properties. The graft copolymers were characterized by melt flow rate (MFR), by intrinsic viscosity and their identification was made by IR-spectrophotometer. It is observed from the results that the various chemical structure of the polymers have significant influence on physical properties. The results of intrinsic viscosity and MFR indicate higher values with increase of polymerization time, which is a result of increase in size of the chain branches.
