Sažetak
The fatty acid composition of mucilaginous aggregates, bacterial isolates from their plated cultures (marine agar) and direct inoculates (marine broth), were determined in samples collected in the northern Adriatic. All plated aggregates irrespectively of the season, aggregate size or phytoplankton community within contained isolates belonging to gamma-Proteobacteria like, alpha-Proteobacteria like and Cytophaga like bacteria. The relative number of bacterial isolates clustered with each of three groups was significantly different between aggregates. The highest relative proportion of gamma-Proteobacteria like colonies was found in freshly formed aggregates (low bacterial contribution, earlier phases of diatom exponential growth). In aged aggregates (the highest bacterial contribution, advanced diatom exponential growth) the relative proportion of bacterial colonies with CF- like profiles was at maximum. Contributions of more than one bacterial group, with increasing proportion of CF-like isolates (gamma and CF ; alpha and CF) were noticed in aging aggregates, with intermediate characteristics. The results showed that during the aggregate aging processes, degradation of the mucous matrix, bacterial successions and the phytoplankton growth took place inside all of the aggregates. Such aging pattern was confirmed in laboratory experiment with aggregates inhabited with Cylindrotheca closterium. In spite of the fact that advanced growth and domination of Cylindrotheca closterium were usually determined in aging and aged aggregates, during the summer 2002 the domination of this epipelic diatom was found in numerous freshly formed aggregates. The results suggest that this species is not only able to colonise the aggregates, but also it might have an important role in the mucilage events.
