Sažetak
Ever since Fillmore (1968) linguists have tried to explain the differences in the subjectivization of semantic roles (deep cases, semantic functions, θ -roles) in terms of Semantic Function Hierarchies (SFH) and cut-off points, which impose constraints on the number and type of semantic roles that can be mapped onto the syntactic function subject (or grammatical relation in some frameworks). The present paper approaches these mappings with a view of interpreting them within the general framework of cognitive linguistics, and more specifically, within the research into metonymy. The comparison of some English sentences with their German and Croatian counterparts has shown that what have traditionally been described as differences in the subjectivization of semantic roles can be analyzed as the differences in metonymization. Such a description is more general because what have been treated as two different semantic roles can be subsumed under the CONTAINER FOR CONTENTS metonymy. While metonymy is a cognitive process reflecting the speaker’ s intentions, it should also be added that it is constrained by the structural possibilities of a language.
