Sažetak
This paper discusses the effects of serving different types of Web content for Web server workload. Two different Web servers have been studied: one serving “ classical” Web content, consisting mainly of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) files and images (GIF, JPEG, etc), and the other serving a 3D virtual community environment mainly based on Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) files. The workload parameters studied include: file size distribution, server response size, and concentration of references. The results obtained for prevalently HTML-based site demonstrate that both the file size distribution and the server response size distribution are heavy-tailed, which is consistent with results reported in literature. The results obtained for the VRML-based site show that the file size distribution is also heavy-tailed, while for the server response size this could not be established for the whole range of server response sizes due to a relatively small number of unique files. Both servers have been shown to exhibit a strong concentration of references, but with significant differences in terms of server transfer and disk storage.
