Sažetak
Castration belongs to the oldest surgical interventions. In veterinary medicine it was known to almost all nations and cultures of the ancient world. Castration was carried out by people trained to help sick animals. In the Middle ages, castration was performed by hippiatrics who were not trained in veterinary medicine. In the second half of the 18th century, as the result of the establishment of the first veterinary schools, a qualified veterinary personnel was formed who could successfully carry out surgical interventions based on the new tenets. Castration is carried out for the purpose of suppressing the activity of sex glands in order to achieve desired changes in castrated animals. In spite of the existing laws and regulations, castrations in the past, were performed by ordinary people called “ spayers” who used primitive operating tools under non-sterile conditions. The most primitive methods of castrations are described in this paper, as well as the original veterinary instruments used in the operation. These materials are kept at the Museum for the History of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb, Croatia. The paper ends with the description of castration being performed nowadays and the preventive measures taken for the animal protection against possible complications.
