Sažetak
Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the temperature changes in the root canal during calculus removal from the root surface by Er:YAG laser equiped with Variable Square Pulse (VPS) technology. Methodology: Twenty single rooted teth were used. The crowns were removed and the canals were enlarged using a step-back technique to allowed positionig of thermoprobe in the midle third of root canal. Lasing was performed using the Er:YAG laser (λ =2940nm) (Fidelis, Fotona, Slovenia) with fiber tip of 950 μ m in contact mode. A very short pulse was used (100 μ s) with energy of 200 mJ and frequency of 10 Hz during 40 s. Temperature was measured by calibrated thermometer with sensitivity 0.1°C. Themperature on the begining of lasing and the highest temperature reached was recorded. Also time needed for beginig of cooling to the room temperature was recorded. Results ; The average temperature increase was 2.2 ± ; ; 0.4°C. Cooling to the room temperature was started for nine samples during lasing procedure and for other eleven in 3.4 ± ; ; 1.2 s after end of lasing. Conlusion: Temperature increase in the root canal during calculus removal does not overcome 2.6 °C what is considered not harmful for the pulp tissue.
