Sažetak
Regarding its natural conditions, river transport in Croatia has good possibilities for development.Croatian rivers connect the country in the East-West direction and enter the Danube, one of the biggest European waterways.Howewer, river transport does not make sufficient use of the available natural advantages. The waterways are not regulated for navigation, a modern port infrasstructure has not been constructed, and the river fleet is mainly out-dated.Modernisation of vessels is one way to improve the traffic service supply. In Europe today, pushed navigation convoys and self-propelled ships are mainly in use, whereas towing technology is being abandoned.Croatia needs to restore its fleet, and this can be done by the construction of new ships, the purchase of used ships, or by modifying some of the existing nonpropelled ships. Here, the climatic conditions need to be considered also, as wellas the maximum vessel dimensions allowed by the Croatian waterways and tehnical and tehnological characteristics of every one of the existing navigation tehnologies.Taking into account all the criteria, it is possible to include such vessels into the fleet that will provide faster development of inland waterway traffic.
