Sažetak
The aim of this presentation is to point out the main contributions of sociobiological theory to the understanding and investigation of human maternal infanticidal behavior, and to anticipate directions of future investigations. Special status is given to the fertile integrative function of the sociobiological approach, consilience of theories and knowledge from different scientific disciplines, especially biological and social sciences. The sociobiological approach views infanticide as one of the consequences of full termination of maternal parental investment and as only one possibility of a whole range of possibilities of reproductive process manipulation. In that sense, sociobiology, as an evolutionary comparative theory of social behavior discovers the ultimate causes of infanticidal behavior and reconciles them with proximate causes discovered by other disciplines. This tendency towards knowledge reconciliation leads and will continue to lead to important scientific discoveries not only about infanticidal behavior but also many other aspects of the social behavior of humans and other animal species.
