Sažetak
The objective of this study was to determine whether the mandibular bone mineral density (BMD) and some linear radiomorphometric measurements on panoramic radiograph (PR) are correlated with different type of denture wearing (complete dentures or removable partial dentures - tooth supported Kennedy class I). In a total of 136 dental panoramic radiographs (DPR) the following parametars were evaluated: thickness of the mandibular cortex below the mental foramen, thickness of the mandibular cortex at the antegonion and gonion ; and panoramic mandibular index. Using the dental PRs and copper stepwedge, the mandibular BMD was investigated densitometrically. All the BMD values were expressed in equivalents of the actual stepwedge thickness. The results revealed statisticalaly significant difference in all the measured radiomorphomoetric indices between partial and complete denture wearers with AI, GI, MI and PMI higher in removable partial denture wearers. Statistically significant difference was also found in BMD values between partial and complete denture wearers, on the upper border of the mandibular residual alveolar ridge, under the denture base, with BMD values higher in removable partial denture wearers. The results support the idea that under the base of mucosa borne dentures occlusal forces stimulate bone resosrption, while under the base of tooth and mucosa borne dentures, occlusal forces may even cause apposition of the bone.
