Sažetak
Objective: To investigate levels of serum cholesterol in war veterans with PTSD, with or without comorbidity. The number of studies related to level of lipids in PTSD patients is very low, both taking into account patients only with PTSD or patients with PTSD and comorbidity. Some studies reported increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in PTSD patients, which suggests an increased level of cholesterol in such patients. Methods and materials: Groups comprised 40 war veterans with PTSD, 40 war veterans with PTSD comorbid with depression and 40 healthy control subjects.PTSD and comorbid diagnosis were evaluated according to the DSM-IV criteria, CAPS, M.I.N.I., PTSD Trauma Questionnaire and Questionnaire of risk factors for elevated lipids. Groups were matched for age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption and other sociodemographic characteristics. War veterans were also selected according to the combat traumatic experience. Patients with active psychosis, dementia, schizophrenia, active medical problems, personality disorders as well as with substance and alcohol abuse 6 months prior to this investigation, were excluded. Lipid profiles of each patient were performed 36 h after the admission. The lipid levels between the investigated groups were compared according to PTSD, and comorbidity as well as to the intensity of PTSD symptoms.
