Sažetak
With the increase of awareness for necessity of joined international efforts with the aim of preserving biodiversity and the environment, there is also increase in initiatives and projects that combine data from several countries into unique databases. Such an Initiative from the extended "Višegrad 4" countries (Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland + Ukraine and Croatia) from 2001, initiated the development of Croatian ecological network. Using the criteria and methodology developed for creation of the Pan-European ecological network (PEEN), preliminary ecological network was created based on available data. The ecological network consists of international and national core areas (contains habitats, species or landscapes of importance), corridors (interconnect the core areas, diminish the problem of habitat fragmentation), buffer zones (protect the network from outer potentially damaging impacts) and stepping-stones (areas of seasonal importance for migratory species). All in all, 32% of land, and 6.5% of sea was included in the preliminary ecological network, i.e. 22.9% of overall state territory. Analysing the econet through its components, in its further development we are expecting increase of included portion in all econet elements in sea, as well as increase in terrestrial buffer zones and change of portion of terrestrial corridors upon inclusion of data on habitats. That way created econet will ensure more efficient protection of the environment and its living organisms. Further work on the development of national ecological network is ensured through the LIFE – Third countries project "CRO-NEN".
