Sažetak
Recently we have found an increased prevalence of calcium channel blocker (CCB) usage in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria as compared to a control patient group (J. Am. Soc. Nephrol., 2001 ; 12:216A). This may be due to a decreased uretheral motility caused by CCB. The present study was undertaken to examine preliminary whether there is an increased usage of CCB among patients with urosepsis, as compared to patients with other pathogenetic forms of sepsis. Surgical causes of sepsis were excluded. For that purpose data records from patients hospitalized during subsequent three years (1998-2001) in the clinical ward and Intensive care unit of the Department of Medicine were analyzed for patients diagnosed with sepsis. Included patients had positive blood cultures, and patients diagnosed with urosepsis had the same bacteria cultured from blood and urine samples. Among 68 patients included, there were 26 women and 42 men. Urosepsis was diagnosed in 20 patients (13 women and 7 men). 8 out of 20 patients with urosepsis (40.0%) and 13 out of 48 patients with other forms of sepsis (27%) were taking CCB (p=0.5, Fisher exact, urosepsis vs. Other forms of sepsis). In particular, female patients with urosepsis were receiving more frequently CCB (4 out of 13 ; 30.8%) than female patients with other forms of sepsis (4 out of 23 ; 17.4%, p=0.3, Fisher exact test). In conclusion, the present preliminary study found that patients with urosepsis were taking CCB more frequently than patients with sepsis of other pathogenesis. However, a larger number of patients included is needed to reach statistical significance
