Sažetak
The cities are extremely complicated social and spatial organisms ; but it is possible to study the small towns and analyze the results of similar urban processes on a much smaller scale. The historical cities are important national symbols on the one hand, while on the other they have always been places of exchange and contact between the nations and between various ethnic groups. The Istrian towns are analysed as the signs of history. It is explained how the history was differently – often inaccurately – interpreted and used as political tool in the XX century. The complexity of meanings is carried even by the smallest towns and it defines the unique character of each historical city or town. It provides the place of identity in the age of globalization and it is important to be preserved.
