Sažetak
Cotton material gets a yellow tint when treated with citric acid. It is most serious disadvantage in the application of citric acid as a crease-proofing agent. Some researchers widely quoted claimed that even small amounts of aconite acid in citric acid could be held responsible for the change in coloration. They tried to prevent the change by adding amine hydroxilalkyl or quarternary ammonium salts, and simultaneously lowering the amount of dihydrogenbiphosphite needed. Unfortunately, this procedure proved successful in lowering, but not completely eliminating the effect of cotton fabric yellowing.
The autos have started the investigation described here from the thesis that citric acid, when heated, changes into the anhydride of itaconic acid, while water and CO2 are released. Further heating results in the anhydride of citacronic acid with three conjugated double links, which, in fact, cause the yellowing discussed. To prevent the yellowing and coloration change of the fabric, we have tried to investigate the influence of electrone receptor AlCl3 - Lewis's acid (or protonoid) on conjugated double links in citraconic acid anhydride.
The degree of yellowing of a white treated cotton fabric was investigated. Cotton fabric was dyed with various groups of dyes: vynil sulphone based reactive dyes, bifunctional reactive dyes, vat and direct dyes. Dyed and undyed samples were treated with citric acid with dihydrogenhipophosphite and aluminium chloride as catalysts. Coloration changes and dye fastness were investigated. The results indicate that a higher level of catalyst results in a higher degree of whiteness and lower yellowing effect. The impact of the citric acid treatment varies in instances tested.
