Sažetak
For the last fifteen years the harmful algal bloom (HAB) problem has become evident in the Adriatic, particulary in the northern Adriatic. Red tides have been common phenomena in the north-western Adriatic Sea and in Kaštela Bay (central Adriatic) since 1980. Potentially toxic species such as Dinophysis spp. and Alexandrium spp. have been found; the former for many years, the latter only since 1982 (northern Adriatic) and 1989 (Kaštela Bay). However, DSP toxic problems did not appear until the summer of 1989 (in the northern Adriatic) and 1995 (Kaštela Bay), whereas a PSP problem was recorded as early as summer of 1994 from a rather narrow area of wild shellfish settlement in the northern Adriatic.
