Sažetak
Increasing environmental concern, higher effluent quality demands, high cost of conventional wastewater treatment facilities and increase of energy prices had focused scientists on more intensive research of wetlands. Simplicity of performance, rather low cost of construction and maintenance, ability to remove more than 90% of BOD, COD, TSS and bacteriological pollution, has classified wetlands as ecological and low cost solution of wastewater treatment. In accordance with realization of project STIRP "Wetlands facility prototype for wastewater treatment", constructed wetland prototype for municipal wastewater treatment (City of Zagreb) is projected and realized. This paper presents experiences in conception, development and realization, investigation scopes and application possibilities of wetlands for wastewater treatment in accordance with strategy of Croatia as ecological and touristic orientated country.
