Sažetak
The second half of the nineteenth century was a period of outstanding progress of Rijeka. Economic growth was followed by urban transformation that planted Central European character into the image of the city. Complex and often tensed coexistence of Croats, Hungarians, Italians, Slovenians and many other nationalities gave Rijeka its metropolitan character. Historicism as a dominant architectural style with its stylistic varieties was more than appropriate for that social diversity.
