Sažetak
Forest ecosystems of the Plitvice Lakes National Park account for about 75% of the area. They have a considerable impact on the hydrological conditions of the entire system of the National Park. Stable forest ecosystems ensure a balanced production of biomass and permanent multiple forest functions which the ecosystem can offer. However, the stability of forest ecosystems is disrupted by various adverse factors, which is manifested in intensive dieback of principal forest tree species. In the Plitvice Lakes National Park, in the area of Medveđak-Plitvički Klanac, at an altitude of 625 m, dieback intensity of the silver fir was about 78% in relation to its wood mass and 37.5% in relation to the total wood mass of the stand. In virgin forest reserves, dieback intensities of the silver fir were from 11-13%, or from 5-6%, which is about 2.5 to 7 times less than in the stands suffering extreme and significant dieback. The lowest dieback intensities were found in the already managed stands. The causes and effects of catastrophic silver fir dieback were analysed, and on the basis of comparisons with dieback intensities in virgin forest reserves, recommendations were given for implementing protective, sanitary and silvicultural treatments aimed at preserving the stability of forest ecosystems affected by dieback, preventing site and stand degradation and ensuring general functions of forest ecosystems.
