Sažetak
The paper consists of two parts. The first provides a brief account of the data that illustrate the attitudes of Croatian physicians towards human genetics and eugenics, from the very beginnings (starting in the 19th century) up to the World War II.(WW-II).The second part gives information on the period after WW-II, as seen from the perspective of impressive scientific achievements in human genetics and subsequent development of international normative initiatives, the later being mostly related to the last decade of the 20th century. It includes also account on the present situation in medical ethics education at the schools of medicine in Croatia, at the undergraduate and postgraduate leveles, with particular emphasis on inclusion of the specific ethical instruction and discussion related to the human genetics issues. The educational programmes and resources are analysed, and requirements for the future improvements and deepening of medical ethical education are outlined, together with perspectives of international collaboration and networking in the field, especially among the Countries of Central and Eastern Europe. These are indispensable activities for all countries in transition, while pursuing adequate integration and harmonisation initiatives directed towards the European and global scientific, research and educational structures.
