Sažetak
Writing is a system of discrete graphic symbols (drawings or letters) by means of which we can record, keep and convey information (texts) of a certain language on lasting material regardless of how far the addressee is in time or space from the addresser. Writing is at the same time a representation of the level of the symbolic form of a language. This paper discusses the relationship between letters and voice (sound), the connection between writing and drawing and finally, the links between writing, time and dirrection (orientation). Problems of logical and historical evolution of writing, as well as the relationship between the alphabet and the text, are also analysed. The analysis also includes semantic and technical factors which determine different directions found in systems of writing.
