Over past ten years research in human genetics resulted with enormous knowledge on etiology, diagnosis and prevention of not only inherited diseases, but also of the most common diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The lessons learned from newborn screening programs become important for developing strategy to integrate genetics into public health policies and on the broadest scale of clinical medicine. Genotypic classification of diseases might explain different outcomes and responses to therapy of individuals suffering from the same disease. Our study was undertaken with the aim to recognize genetic profile of cardiovascular disease and to investigate to what extent specific mutations or a cluster of mutations might be significant for differences in outcome of treatment. In 438 CAD patients, a set of 36 genes (74 mutations) responsible for lipoprotein metabolism, hypertension, cardiac ion channel function, endothelial cell function, glucose and homocysteine metabolism, hemostasis and coagulation were analyzed prior to angioplastic surgery. Patient group was followed up for the following three years. Survival rate and outcome were analyzed and classified according to genetic profiles and single gene mutations. The results of this study differentiated a cluster of genetic changes in CAD and recognized specific mutations connected with the outcome of treatment. The results might be important for prediction of CAD and development of additional strategy for treatment.
