Sažetak
Here is presented some of the significant steps in the development of diverse fundamental plant cell technologies in last fifty years. There are still difficultiues that most of the experimentations are empirical. The results have been arrived at by trial and error. That will continue until we begin to understand and are able to regulate plant cell differentiation leading to somatic embryogenesis and plant development. That is still not understood. An understanding of the control and reglation of secondary plant product biosynthesis similarly remains a challenge. Thus, while much has been accomplished, there are many major challenge waiting for those with ingenious ideas and a good, practical mind to find the solutions to some very basic problems in plant biology.
