Sažetak
The sports career, defined as a multtiyear sports activities of the individual aimed iat high level achievements in sport is not a homogenous entitiy, but is composed of several stages. Each stage, including sports career transition (STC) and adaptation to post-sports life, is characterized by a set of specific demands requiring adjustment by athletes. Between athletic accedent and mediating factors, that determine the quality of STC process, conceptual model (Oglivie and Taylor, 1993) emphasizes the voluntariness of gradualness of the sports career termination, the degree of athletic identity, the evaluation of athletic achievements, and the planning of post-sports career life. The aim of the study is to investigate the structure of STC. The qualitative study induced 20 (10 male, 10 female) 28-39 yr. old elite athletes who terminated their ssports career on average 7 yrs. ago, 13 voluntarily, 7 had retired involuntarily.A semi structured in-depth interview schedule was designed to elict qualitative characteristics of STC, and interview about STC was conducted.Answers were analyzed using Checklist for coding STC (Cecić-Erpič, 2000).Results of cluster analiyiy showed three types of subjective interpretations of STC and adaptation to post-sport life: 1-pseudo adaptation to STC, 2-Orientation on negative aspects of STC, 3- Non-traumatic adaptation to post-sport life ; a:Integrated adaptaion to post-sport life, b:adaptation with positive polarization, c: realistic orientation on consequences of sport career. Results show that STC is not an entity but is consisted of different sub-phases, or types. The practical value of this study is to draw attention to the structure of STC, which could serve as guidlines for quality counseling for retiring athletes.
