Sažetak
Companies in Central and Eastern European countries face a challenging task in improving their capacity for innovation, as innovation is expected to play a crucial role in transformation of economic structures and industrial sectors in transition countries through development of new products, services and processes. This paper reports on the study that was performed on 100 leading Croatian companies in the spring of 2002. The purpose of the study was to explore several issues related to innovations development in leading Croatian firms as seen by their upper management. This paper examines innovation output both in terms of number of innovations and in terms of their commercial significance for the company. It investigates importance of firm's business functions for innovation development and explores importance of external collaborative relationships. The effect of firm ownership on innovation is examined. In addition, to gain better understanding of potential impediments to innovation, firms that have innovated in the three years prior to the survey are contrasted with those that have not innovated.
