Sažetak
New era in genetic research and almost daily gene discoveries are reported for human diseases, but the implications of this for medical practice are still far from clear. Over past five years public health agencies have begun to examin how advances in human genetics can be used to prevent disease and improve the health of the population. The lessons learned from newborn screening programs for metabolic diseases are expected to become important in developing the strategy to integrate genetics into public health policies in order to fulfill society's interest in assuring the conditions in which people can be healthy.
