A retrospective study was conducted in order to investigate the frequency and infecting strains of dermatophytoses in domestic animals in Croatia from 1986 - 2001. A total of 3915 dogs, 2712 cats, 265 cattle, 81 horses, 21 goats, 174 rabbits, 44 chinchillas and 90 guineas pigs, with suspected dermatophytosis, were examined. Out of those animals, 789 (20%)dogs, 1064 (39%) cats ; 94 (35%) cattle ; 1(1%)horse ; 3 (14%) goats ; 46 (26%) rabbits ; 9(20%) chinchillas and 4 (4%)guinea pigs were found to have dermatophytes. The most frequent isolate was M. canis representing 88% of all culture positive samples and 90% of the positive samples from dogs and 98% from cats. A significant increase in dermatophyte infections with M. canis, particularly in cats, was observed in the early nineties. Other isolated species were T. mentagrophytes (6%), T. verrucosum (5%), M. gypseum (2%)and M. cookie (0, 1%). T. verrucosum was the only species isolated from cattle. In fur animals the only isolated species was T. mentagrophytes. In order to establish the protein profile of the most common dermatophyte M. canis, using a SDS-PAGE technique, cytoplasmic extracts were prepared and analysed. Their protein composition were mutually compared as well as the protein profiles of other dermatophytes of the genus Microsporum. These patterns could be separated into genus distinct groups with minor strain differences, which appeared to correlate with groups based on morphology.
