Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to compare the prevalence of obesity in general population and type 1 and type 2 diabetics on the basis of a big, systematic sample in the clinic. Prevalence of obesity (overweight (BMI 25-30) and gross obesity (BMI>30)) as referred in a published national survey were compared to prevalence of obesity in persons with diabetes (1044 type 1 and 8260 type 2 diabetics systematically choosen from the population of diabetics examined in the clinic during the last year). Type 2 group in comparison with type 1 was older (median age 64 vs. 38), more obese (median BMI 28 vs. 24), with similar diabetes duration (median 10 vs. 13 years) and blood glucose control (median HbA1c 8.0% vs 8.3%). Prevalence of overweight in background population was 50.9% in males and 33.3% in females and that of obesity 13.0% in males and 15.6% in females. Percent of lean, overweight and obese persons is presented in the table 1. Chi-square test revealed that type 2 diabetics were more obese than the background population and type 1 diabetics. Type 1 diabetics were leaner in comparison with both type 2 and the background population.
