Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to establish the association of the level of obesity (non-obese: BMI<25, overweight: BMI 25-30, grossly obese: BMI>30) with cardiovascular risk factors (serum triglycerides, cholesterol-total, HDL and LDL, blood pressure, age, duration of diabetes, HbA1c, fasting and postprandial BG) in type 2 diabetics. Data on 8260 type 2 diabetic patients (4313 females and 3947 males) were analysed. Association of obesity level as an independent variable and several cardiovascular risk factors as dependent variables was analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and different models of the MANOVA. Duncan test was used for post-hoc comparison. Post-hoc analysis for separate variables revealed significant association for all groups for each parameter except for postprandial BG, whereas LDL and total cholesterol differed only between nonobese and obese groups. MANOVA model with all variables revealed significant association with blood pressure and triglycerides. A model which excluded these parameters revealed association of age, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. The level of obesity in type 2 diabetics is strongly associated with cardiovascular risk profile. Most of this effect is due to blood pressure and serum triglycerides. Similary, higher blood glucose levels were associated with overweight and grossly obese groups.
