Sažetak
This paper analyzes how and to what extent tourism has affected demographic trends on Pelješac peninsula. Until 1970's Pelješac had been oriented mainly to agriculture, shipping and fishery, but gradually tourism became the most important economic activity. At the same time, agriculture started losing its importance, which is observable in the economic structure of the population - reduced share of those employed in primary sector and increasing share of those employed in tertiary sector. It is obvious that stronger development of the towns on the mainland coast has had negative effects on demographic situation on most of Croatian island and on Pelješac peninsula too. Better possibilities for employment and better living standard in the towns on the mainland are a powerful pull factor, especially for younger people. The analysis of population structures on Pelješac peninsula indicates that tourism, with its seasonal character, has not neutralized depopulation of the peninsula. The age structure is seriously disrupted and the ageing process is evident. Of course, there are differences between certain parts of the peninsula - depopulation process is stronger in agricultural than in tourist areas, but those differences are still not so emphasized.
