Sažetak
Franjo Marković's interest for music is not disputable and is displayed in various aspects of his activity: in the review article (Franjo Kuhač: Južno-slovienske narodne popievke u notah, s glasovirskom pratnjom i s tekstom izvornim /South-Slav Folk Songs in Notes with the Piano Accompaniment and with the Authentic Text/, Vienac, 1878), in the libretto (Mislav by I. Zajc), in the running the Croatian Singing Society "Kolo", being a president from 1883 till 1886, and, finally, in the field of the aesthetics of music. The topics connected with that field are displayed within the framework of Marković's aesthetic system presented in the book Razvoj i sustav obćenite estetike (Development and System of General Aesthetics, 1903). There is a significant attention paid to the music history periodization matters. Together with Vjenceslav Novak Franjo Marković was one of the first authors in Croatia to deal with such problems, and the first one to publish his periodization of general music history. It is founded on the division into five periods: religious age, classical instrumental music age, romanticism (lyric age and coloristic and declamatory age), naturalism. The entire history of music up to Palestrina Marković considers only preparing period. However, his periodization had no influence upon Croatian music historiography. In this paper Marković's theses are analysed and compared with the attainments of Croatian and European music historiography of the time. Critical judgements are also carried out by the standards of the contemporary music-historiographic achievements.
