Sažetak
Background and Purpose: The aim of the study was indirect detection of zinc status in swine by determination of catalytic activities of zinc-dependent enzymes. Material and Methods: The study included 42 German Landrace x Pietren x Large White x Swedish Landrace weaned crossbreds divided into one control group and two experimental groups (T1, T2) of 14 animals each. Control group animals (C) received insufficient dietary zinc, experimental group T1 received zinc supplementation in the form of ZnSO4 (80 mg/kg feed), and experimental group T2 received zinc supplementation in the form of zinc methionate (40 mg/kg feed). Blood samples were collected on days 1, 28, 56 and 105. Zinc concentration, alkaline phosphatase activity and alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes were determined in serum, and 5-nucleotidase activity was determined in lymphocytes. Result: A decreased zinc concentration in serum correlated well with the decreased total alkaline phosphatase activity (r=0.94) and the decreased 5-nucleotidase activity (r=0.67). Decreased zinc concentration in serum most probably reflects changes in the relative proportion of alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes. Conclusion: Based on the good correlation between the changes in zinc concentration in serum and activities of zinc-dependent enzymes, we propose the use of reliable and simple analytical procedures (determination of alkaline phosphatase and 5-nucleotidase activity) for the assessment of zinc status.
