Sažetak
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a developed transmission technology for the broadband communication networks (B-ISDN). ATM offers integration of various services, including voice, video, and data. To achieve this, ATM guarantees various quality of service to different traffic types. Available Bit Rate (ABR) service is defined to provide efficient and reliable transfer for data applications over ATM networks. An end-to-end, closed-loop traffic flow control has been defined for the ABR service. It is rate-based, and operates in a binary or explicit mode. In this work, a performance evaluation of the various proposed traffic flow control algorithms is performed, including both binary and explicit schemes. The system is analyzed by anaytical and simulation models. The analytical formulation is based on the fluid-flow approximation, while the simulation model is built by a developed discrete-event simulator. Obtained analytical and simulation results are discussed and compared. Various network configurations are defined, including single-node and multiple-node cases. The performance metrics include algorithm efficiency (link utilization), queue length, fairness of the rate partitioning, end-to-end delay as a function of both end-system and network parameters, network size (LAN, WAN), varying background traffic of guaranteed services, etc. Special attention is given to the analysis of transient effects of the explicit-rate schemes, which occur due to propagation delay, varying available capacity, and number of active flows, but also are characterized by the traffic flow control algorithm itself.
