Sažetak
The paper deals with phenomena of retraditionalisation form sociological and historical perspectives. This case study presents one of the many urban street festivals called &#8220 ; Days of Radunica&#8221 ; founded 1993 in a Croatian town &#8211 ; Split. The quart named Radunica is settled near by historic city center and built in traditional Mediterranean architecture. &#8220 ; Days of Radunica&#8221 ; takes place in last week in June, in open spaces (few streets and one small square) and refers to traditional St.John and St.Peter celebrations. Many performances are imbued by elements form other traditional and local customs, but also from contemporary city life. In the analyses the authors select several main participants: local community, local government institutions, cultural and art performers and tourists. This local public spectacle remakes and revives most important events form past and local tradition, became &#8220 ; new-old&#8221 ; urban ritual made form different elements of both heritage and modernity. In this context, festival is an example of &#8220 ; inventions of traditions&#8221 ; (E. Hobsbawm) and an event in accordance with the main value of regeneration and revitalization of urban life. However, the tendencies of postmodern retraditionalisation in the sphere of public life reveal great importance of cultural heritage and social tradition for building local identity. Local people recognize this street festival also as a new chance for (post)modern and sustainable development in cooperation with tourism in region.
