Sažetak
Scouring of cotton removes non-cellulosic material from the primary cell wall membrane of cotton fibers in order to reach a high wettability and dyeability of cotton materials. This membrane consists of a thin matrix of waxes, pectins, proteins and other substances, which renders the cotton fiber resistant to water. Conventional scouring of cotton is typically done with sodium hydroxide solution (1-4%) for one hour. At harsh conditions this process also leads to destruction of many others non-cellullosic components and even to some damage of cotton cellulose. Among non-cellulosic compounds in cotton primary wall it has been found that only a part of calcium pectatelwax complex has to be removed in order to obtain wattable and dyeable cotton. For such and environmental reasons it was recently developed the enzymatic scouring process using pectin lyase, so called BioPreparation of cotton. The objective of this paper is to investigate the ability of pectinase to improve the surface wetting of raw cotton by measuring the wicking distance of polar and apolar solvents. The calculated surface free energy components of cotton surface are discussed in a quantitative way. Material used was desized cotton fabric, (130 g/m2). Pectinase BioPrep 3000L supplied by Novozymes in the standard strength 3000 APSU/g was applied.
