Sažetak
Significant distribution of properties of wood, or the variation of properties observed from pith towards bark, in radial direction, as well as the possibility of observing the tendencies of wood properties by noticing the changes in property trends, should help in foreseeing and establishing the top-quality zones in the use of wood, within an individual tree of a certain wood species.
This facilitates a rather successful prediction of the usage value of a certain wood species as regards the position in tree as well as a trees age. There is also the possibility of foreseeing the best moment for felling an individual tree in order to get the wood of the best usability as regards the quality or the property values. For this research, the three most significant and the most commercial wood species in Croatia were chosen: oak (Quercus robur L.), beech (Fagus silvatica L.) and fir-wood (Abies alba Mill.). On the tested material, the following have been observed and analysed: density of oven dry wood, radial shrinkage, tangential shrinkage, bending strength and compression strength parallel to the grain, from pith to bark, that is, in radial direction.
