Sažetak
Throughout the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the two primary bases of identity development have been confessionalism and nationalism. Despite the language similarity, the oppositions regarding identity were (and have remained) extremely powerful. In their written form they reveal the depth of mutual distrust. Three monastery chronicles dating from the 18th century are of crucial importance for the history of the Catholic community. Their authors’ writing often describes the members of the other two confessional communities. In this way the Other is discerned, taking a stereotypical and often an exceptionally negative role in the narrative of the Franciscan chronicles, depending on their confessional affiliation. This paper analyses the narration procedures used to build the mentioned image to indicate the context of its emergence and to examine whether this is a consequence of certain chroniclers’ subjective views or the ideas adopted from a wider circle of their community.
