Sažetak
Municipal waste is a significant factor in metropolitan areas due to its quantity ; it negatively impacts the environment, public health, the economic prosperity of the residents, and their overall quality of life. To minimize negative effects on the environment and society as a whole, it is vital to assess the environmental implications of waste management processes, goods, and services throughout their entire cycles. The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental effects of the City of Zagreb's municipal solid waste management system using the life cycle assessment IWM-EPIC/CSR software. Based on data on the City of Zagreb's waste for 2020, the existing municipal waste management system of the City of Zagreb was reviewed, and three versions of the enhanced municipal solid waste management system were taken into consideration. In proposed versions it was assumed that less municipal waste would be disposed in favour of type-specific waste collection, processing, and utilization (such as recycling or energy recovery), as well as the accomplishment of the quantitative and qualitative targets established by the Waste Management Act of Republic of Croatia. The findings show that by implementing one of the three proposed versions, all significant negative effects on human health, environmental degradation, and the extraction of irreplaceable natural resources would be significantly minimized.
