Sažetak
Kajetan Vičić (Rijeka, c. 1650 – ?, 1700), a Theatine monk and a theologian, wrote a lengthy epic poem on the life of Virgin Mary titled Libri XII Jesseidos, hoc est admiranda SS. Matris Dei, ex regia stirpe Jesse oriundae, Virginis Mariae vita. He finished the poem just before his premature death, and it was published in Prague in 1700. The Jesseid is an ambitious epic: besides being large (13, 531 hexameters), it is extensive in narration (covers events from the fall of Adam to the narrator’s present with numerous digressions), and inclusive for many types of content (events covering Mary’s life both from canonical and apocryphal gospels, Jewish and Roman history, theology, geography, the author’s life and homeland, Lutheranism, Ottomans, New World, contemporary astronomy). On this occasion I will follow the life of Virgin Mary as it is narrated in Vičić’s epic, from the moment she was chosen to be the Mother of God, until her Coronation after she was assumed into Heaven. Although she is not a technically a saint, her life is told as that of a saint, in a series of episodes which stress her virtues, such as piety, humbleness, obedience and devotion to God. Mary is also represented as living a heroic life: it is heroic, because “she endured heroically the death of her most beloved Son”, as the subtitle says. The Virgin is shown to participate in situations that can be qualified as “miracles”, like her knowledge of future events, her exclusive ability to interpret signs from God, her mastery of languages, her role as instigator of some of Christ’s miracles. Apart from the life of Mary, on two occasions, in a form of digression, the author concentrates on the local cult of Mary’s house, which according to the legend was carried by angels from Nazareth to Trsat (Croatia), where it stayed for three years, and from there to Loreto in Italy. The poet had special interest in promoting this local cult, since the sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat (Tersactum) is situated on a hill above his native town.
