Sažetak
This paper examines the perception of long vowels in Japanese by speakers of Croatian. Japanese is a mora-timed language, whereas Croatian is a syllable-timed language. In both languages, vowel length is contrastive, as well as pitch. A three- alternative choice identification test was conducted involving all combinations of pitch patterns and long vowel positions in two-syllable words. Two groups of participants, one learning Japanese and the other without any prior knowledge of this language, judged whether a stimulus word included a long vowel, and in which syllable it occurred. For the long vowel in the final position, the error rates for the pitch pattern /HLL/ were comparable to the pitch pattern /HLH/. This is in contrast with the findings of the previous studies (Minagawa et al. 2002), which reported that in English and Korean learners of Japanese, /HLL/ had more than double error rates than /LHL/. Apart from the effects of pitch accent pattern and syllable position, which have been discussed in previous studies, this paper also examines the effect of the participant's variety of Croatian. The results indicate that the Croatian speakers with dynamic accent have higher spread, i.e. lower accuracy compared to the speakers who use pitch accent.
