Gyakorlati horvát (szerb) nyelvtan 'A Practical Croatian (Serbian) Grammar' by Jenő Haller, Croatian grammar books in Hungarian, Croatian grammaticography of the 20th century
Sažetak
Up until this point Jenő Haller´s grammaticographic work has only been partially explored. In 1942 he published his second grammar book titled Gyakorlati muraközi nyelvtan 'A Practical Grammar of the Međimurje Language'. This is the grammar book that put him on the map of Croatian studies. His first grammar book was Gyakorlati horvát (szerb) nyelvtan 'A Practical Croatian (Serbian) Grammar', which was published in 1916, and which remained virtually unknown both as part of the Croatian studies and the Slavic studies in Hungary. This is a grammar book of the Croatian language written in Hungarian as metalanguage and it was published in Budapest just before the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This paper deals with the composition, purpose, and normative prescription and description of Haller's 1916 grammar book. Furthermore, it is compared to grammar books of similar importance written in the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. The comparison is drawn with the works Haller lists in the preface: Gramatika hrvatskoga jezika za niže razrede srednjih škola 'A Croatian Grammar for the Lower Grades of High School' by Maretić and Gramatika hrvatskoga jezika za ženski licej, preparandije i više pučke škole 'A Croatian Grammar for Girls' Lyceum, Teacher Training School and Middle School' by Florschütz. The aim of the comparison between these grammar books is to record the number of normative changes Haller has noted in his book, since many have been noted in other grammar books written in the Triune Kingdom.
