Sažetak
In the long 19th century during the changes on the social, political, and economic field, the Catholic Church did not find an adequate response, which often led to open conflicts between the Church representatives and the state authorities. A striking example is kulturkampf in German countries. There were different models of emancipation in Europe, from cooperation to complete separation. Frequent topics of controversy were jurisdiction over education, marriage, or the participation of priests in political life. The intention of the presentation was to point out the unstoppable spread of liberal ideas in European countries in the 19th century that disrupted relations between the state and the Church both in countries with a Catholic majority (France, Austria, or Spain) and in countries with a Catholic minority (Hungary, Prussia, or the Netherlands). At the heart of the presentation is the case study of Croatia, which were part of the Habsburg Monarchy. Consequently, the relationship between the Catholic Church in Austria and Hungary and the implications of that relationship on the Triune Kingdom were discussed. Finally, we proved that socio-political circumstances were crucial in defining the latter relations even though the ideas of the liberals were similar across Europe. This was proven by the Croatia case, where liberals and representatives of the Church cooperated throughout the long 19th century.
