Sažetak
The paper sets to analyze and compare the information about Byzantines in two 13th-century chronicles: Archdeacon Thomas of Split's History of the Bishops of Salona and Split (Historia Salonitanorum atque Spalatinorum pontificium) and Simon of Kéza's Deeds of the Hungarians (Gesta Hungarorum). The primary purpose of the study is not to inquire into the veracity of what is stated, or to try and discern facts from fiction so as to provide firm points for a historical reconstruction, but to examine the types of information on Byzantines that can be detected in both historical works and the manner in which that information is integrated into the overall course of the respective narratives. The intention is to determine what was that the both chroniclers were most interested in about Byzantines and to provide insights into the narrative contexts of their respective historical works in which the information on Byzantines is placed. The latter avenue of exploration is intended to establish a basis for defining the respective images of Byzantines, fragmentary as they may be, that the chroniclers tried to convey, and to inquire into whether a more specific design or objective might have laid behind these images.
